Room 205, Monday Evening

Now that Anna had a job and an income, she had to think about what to do with it. As a ghost, she didn't need much, but she did need some things if she was going to pass as somewhat normal, and currently her only possessions in the world were her dress and the doll sitting on the bare mattress of her bed. So she'd borrowed a piece of paper and a pen from her roommate's side of the room (she hoped Stacey wouldn't mind) and sat at her desk, working on a list of things she needed.

"First things first," she muttered to herself as she put pen to paper. "Shoes, and we'll see how that goes." Then she glanced over at her bed and added, "And then sheets. Maybe something to...liven this place up a little." Or make it look less vacant, at least.

"Oh, hello, Kenzi," Anna said. "I'm making a list." Well, it was true, but not very enlightening.

"Shopping?" Kenzi asked, wandering in, then paused all the Empty. And the Creepy Doll. "Youuu have one of the dollies." Shudder.

"Yes," Anna confirmed, then looked over at the doll for a moment before looking back at Kenzi and shrugging. "It doesn't move any more." And it had been nice!

"Mmmmmmkay." Kenzi turned her head, her eyes staying on the doll, then turned her head the other way, then tore her gaze away to look back at Anna. "You have more guts than me. Gah... What's on the list so far?" Kenzi flopped on top of the nearest desk, looking around. "Maybe sheets?"

"And shoes," Anna confirmed. "And a radio, and phone, and a coat, and..." she looked down, biting at her lip. "Maybe a camera? Obviously not all at once," she added quickly. Her paycheck was generous, but she'd seen the prices in the stores. It wasn't that generous.

Kenzi got that, and her solution was to always 'obtain' goods, but she wasn't going to suggest that to Anna. Yet.

"There's really cheap radios at Turtle & Canary," she volunteered. "You could get a camera-phone, two birds, one stone. Maybe less expensive overall." She grinned. "What kind of shoes and coat?" She looked down at her own sparkly new pink Doc Martens. "Shiny!"

"They have phones that are cameras?" Anna asked, her eyebrows drawing together in confusion. Then she looked down at Kenzi's shoes and said, "Maybe not quite like those. I don't know. I'll have to see what there is for cheap." It didn't make sense to spend a lot of money on something that might turn out to be a waste.

Kenzi dug into her pocket, and handed over her iPhone. "This is one of the pricier ones, my cousin got it for me." She pressed the button to turn it on. "Phone; camera." Pointing to the buttons. "Plus a ton of other stuff. But you don't have to get a real expensive one right away. Save up for the cool ones..." She grinned at Anna's look at her feet. "You can check out Pixie Dust, they've got a ton."

Anna looked at the phone and asked, "But...where are the buttons?" Cas' phone hadn't been anything like that. "And the numbers?"

"Oh, right, duh." Kenzi turned it on, waited, then showed her the touch-screen. "See? Phone." She hit that image, and it brought up the number pad. "Although I've got a ton of numbers saved in here, mostly people in Canada."

"How do you save the numbers?" Anna asked, peering at it. She realized this was a bit of an odd question, so she added, "Sorry, I've just never had a cell phone before."

Kenzi flipped to that menu, and typed in Anna's name, showed her, then pointed to the space. "As soon as I've your number to type in, I'll put it here, and then I can just flip down this list--" Another page. "And presto, call you!" She cocked her head. "Pre-1990's, right?"

"No, actually, but everyone asks me that," Anna said. "I understand why, though."

"Just really isolated?" Kenzi guessed, thinking of Rapunzel. "Because unless it's a totally different Canada..."

"Yes," Anna said, "that's it exactly, I've been really isolated." Which was actually an understatement. And, because Kenzi was Canadian and would know Thunder Bay wasn't exactly the frozen wastes of the north, she added, "My parents were immigrants from Finland, and we didn't exactly have a lot of money." AKA the reasons she'd been sort of isolated even when she was alive.

"Oh. Yeah, I get how that can suck. We moved to Canada when I was five. From Russia. But we had a ton of family already there," Kenzi said, punching in a button to show a photo of her cousins. "Do your parents speak English, at least?"

"Well, my father's wasn't very good...he died when I was a child," Anna explained. "And my mother was very...traditional. So there was that, too. She never wanted me going anywhere, or talking to anyone, and I was never dressed right."

Kenzi might be advised to note all the past tense.

"Blows," Kenzi sympathized. Then wondered, "Sooo, does she know you're here?"

"No," Anna said matter-of-factly. "She's dead, too. She had a heart attack, apparently. So it's just me. I've been on my own for...a long time now."

"Harsh. Been there too," Kenzi said, face sober for once. "Haven't seen my mom in almost two years." No mention of her dad, but then she never did. She smiled a little, and shrugged. "This place is pretty cool for figuring stuff out, though. What class are you in again?"

"I'm a sophomore," Anna said, and, rolling her eyes, explained, "Winter birthday." Although she'd almost been done with sophomore year when she died...the universe was so unfair.

"Ahh. So yeah, three years, almost, 'til you gotta figure out something else." Kenzi smirked, not without some irony. "Like I've got a clue. All I know is college right away is not an option. I'd go nuts."

"Oh, I definitely won't be going to college," Anna said. "I guess I'll just...find somewhere else to haunt."

It might have been a figure of speech. Really. She swore.

"Right." Which was... okay, just a little odd. But the girl kept a creepy doll. "Whole big world, you'll find somewhere." Kenzi grinned. "Just not back to Thunder Bay, I'm guessing."

"Probably not," Anna agreed. "I don't think there's anything left for me back there." Cas had probably even moved on by now. "Certainly not home."

"So yeah, stuff to make your place more homey. Or home-ish. Home-like," Kenzi said, looking around. "How is the job at the Devil's Nest going, anyway?"

"Pretty well," Anna said. "I stand outside the door and ask to see IDs, so I don't even have to listen to the music very much. Most of the DJs they get there are really terrible." Then she looked around, too, and said, "Well, it couldn't look much less homey. Unless I turned it into a dungeon, I suppose."

"Some people around here are vampires, they might think that's normal," Kenzi said, smirking a little. "But yeah, it's got that lovely institutional feel to it right now. Get some shelves and paintings, though, and you'll be in luck."

"I don't have anything to put on the shelves," she pointed out. "But I would like to get some pictures for the walls. I feel kind of...well, Stacey's so sophisticated," she sighed, gesturing to her roommate's side of the room. "She's from New York, you know."

No, Kenzi didn't know!

"Ahh. So yeah, you can get something in your style, fun colors. Maybe a mirror." Kenzi tilted her head. "Dressing screen, maybe?" Would she actually change out of that dress if she had some privacy?

No, Kenzi. No, she would not. "I'll ask Stacey if it's something she'd like to have," she agreed, deliberately misinterpreting. "Am I understanding right that there's another island that's just a store selling furniture and things?" she asked. "Do you think I could...send someone over there or something? If I can't go myself. I'll try, but the island doesn't seem to want to let me leave," she explained, not sure if she'd told Kenzi that before or not.

"The Island of Ikea? Yeah, it's just over thataway." Kenzi waved her hand. "So, wait, you're trapped here, kind of? I'll get you stuff if you can't leave." She frowned, shaking her head. "So, what happens when you try to go?"

"It's like walking into a wall," Anna said. "It's been that way since that first morning. At least it's not--" she stopped, then tried to play it off, awkwardly half-laughing as she said, "just one house or something."

"Yeeeeah." Okay, you know, there was a whole lot of weird about Anna. Not that Kenzi didn't like her, but. One dress. That thing with her hair. No shoes. Not knowing about cell phones... Kenzi pushed that aside and said more positively, "All we can do is find out, right? See if you can get to Ikea, which is kinda like Fandom. All weird on its own."

"Maybe it'll be okay, if it's weird, too," Anna said. That seemed like it should be how it worked, but she had no idea what the rules actually were. "I'll at least try."

"Cool. Make a party of it." Kenzi grinned. "And maaaybe I have an idea for some of those meatballs."
